  “Recovery”

“Mary” is a lady in her mid seventies who was diagnosed with advanced Alzheimers Disease.  She had been placed in a nursing home by the local hospital after they had treated her on an emergency basis.  Mary’s family reported that she owned several pieces of real estate, but they believed those may have been sold for back taxes.  In the mean time, her nursing home bill was accumulating and there were no arrangements in place to pay for her care.  Feeling overwhelmed, the family desired that a third party guardian, Surrogate Guardian Service Inc., be appointed by the courts to marshal whatever assets she had and to oversee her plan of care.

While Surrogate Guardian Services (SGS) staff worked to ensure that Mary’s medical and personal needs were met, the CareNhome (CNH) team went to work to secure the condominiums that Mary owned and to search through them for further evidence of her assets.

Mary had not been inside her condominiums for quite some time, and they had been subjected to vandalism and were found filled with debris.

It was discovered that she owned three condominiums in total, though the tax status of all three was in need of immediate attention.

The status of Mary’s other assets was initially very unclear.

Trash, mail, and papers were everywhere inside the condominiums.  CareNhome sifted through piles and piles of papers searching for documents of value.

Some of the items recovered were:

  • 2 years of uncashed Social Security checks
  • 2 years of uncashed pension checks
  • 401(k) and stock account documents
  • Several bank accounts and CD’s that had been noted as “unclaimed assets” due to lack of activity
003

CNH was able to successfully recover the “lost” monies, marshalling a total of over $300,000.00 in cash assets.  Taxes on the three condos were paid and were redeemed.

All of Mary’s bills were paid up, including her $50,000.00 nursing home bill. Mary’s Social Security and Pension payments had stopped, so CNH provided the necessary documentation for them to be resumed.

003 Initially the condos were clearly not in sellable condition.  SGS obtained court permission to spend some of the recovered funds to clean and rehab these condos so that they could be sold for a competitive price, gaining at least an additional $50,000.00 for Mary’s estate.
003 Mary’s current, recovered assets are considerable, and a trust will protect them for use towards Mary’s care.  Coupled with Mary’s re-instituted Social Security and Pension incomes, Mary’s financial needs will now be well met
003 While the SGS team was overseeing and assisting with Mary’s medical and personal care needs, the CNH team was providing the manpower and skill needed to put the financial and property related pieces back in order.  So often, life’s recoveries require careful attention to a person’s environmental issues as well as to their health and personal needs.
